Tips for international students
Adapted from the handbook (original author: 嘉卓留学)
Choosing courses
In your first semester, favor math, science and major courses over reading- and writing-heavy ones. Research courses weeks ahead, check professor ratings, and don't rely only on your advisor.
Ask questions
Professors expect questions. Ask them to repeat, explain or give an example.
Office hours
Put office hours on your calendar — the best place for detailed questions and for building relationships with professors and TAs.
Never cheat
Cheating usually means failing the course with an XF on your transcript, visible to future employers and schools.
Get a car
In Houston a car is the best way to get around, and it opens up far more internship options.
Build credit
Pay your credit card in full and on time to build the credit history you'll need for car and home loans.
Work and internships
Experience counts more than GPA. Research a company's projects, reach out to decision-makers directly, and hold salary talk until the second interview.
Parties
The legal drinking age is 21. Never drink and drive — get a ride. Saying no is always fine.
